Complex Wound Care and Pressure Injury Prevention Course

This course meets the general skills and knowledge outlined in NDIS Practice Standards 2021 and NDIS Skills Descriptor 2022

Learning Objectives

To enable workers to provide complex wound care support

Course Format

3 hour face-to-face workshop with knowledge and skills assessment

Course Structure

  • NDIS Code of Conduct and Practice Standards
  • Scope of support worker responsibilities including supervision and delegation arrangements
  • Roles of key health professionals involved in complex wound care mana
  • Basic anatomy of the skin
  • Classifications of wounds and related care requirements
  • The process and stages of wound healing
  • Common consumables and equipment used in complex wound management
  • Risk factors and symptoms of pressure injuries
  • Common strategies to prevent pressure areas and worsening of wound
  • Practical demonstration and hands on practice in simulated environment:
    • Hand hygiene
    • Infection Prevention and Control
    • Aseptic Technique
    • Wound dressing
    • Positioning and turning to prevent a pressure injury
  • When and how to involve or get advice/ request review from the appropriate health practitioner
  • Documentation, consent, privacy, confidentiality and incident reporting

Statement of competence valid for 1 year
